An excessive number of sound sources (or voices) is a common problem faced in game audio development. This is especially true in complex, open world games when the player can travel anywhere in world and interact with thousands of entities. Voice count quickly becomes a problem that must be addressed, but keeping the audio aesthetic intact is a real challenge!

Frontier Development’s lead audio programmer, Will Augar, shows how the company’s voice management technology has evolved and gives a detailed insight into the latest system. The team’s focus on software engineering best practices, such as separation of concerns and “don’t repeat yourself” gives developers a great example of how to tackle complex systems with strict performance requirements.

This talk aims to show how audio programmers how they can develop performant voice management that do not compromise on mix quality.
